Mod Podge Monday: Spicing Up Room Cubes

Happy Monday Everyone! So I know I missed Mod Podge Monday last week, but I have a really good excuse; I promise! I won’t get into detail here because I’m writing a post dedicated to all the things going on in my life at the moment. To make up for my absence, I wanted to do a somewhat large project. Now, don’t get intimidated guys! It’s not difficult at all, it is however a bit time consuming.

I’ll be decorating some old cube style shelves that I have in my room. This method works on any type of dressers or shelves, so feel free to add your own special touch to this project. Okay, let’s get right into it.

For this project you will need:

  • Shelving of your choice
  • Mod Podge
  • Paper or fabric
  • Scissors
  • Craft Knife
  • Tape Messure or ruler
  • Brush
  • Small container
  • Cutting board or scrap cardboard

Start by preparing your supplies, and measuring each surface you would like to cover with paper or fabric. For my cubes, I’ll be covering the top of the shelving unit and the bottoms of each shelf. I’ll also be using one large piece of paper to cover the back of the shelves so that people won’t be able to see straight through my shelves. If you already have backing for your sleeves this step isn’t necessary unless you’re just feeling creative and inspired. I wanted all my shelves to match, so I’m using bulletin board paper. It’s much cheaper than scrapbooking paper when you need a lot of on particular pattern.

Once you’ve measured all your surfaces, cut your paper or fabric to fit those measurements. Pour some Mod Podge into your container, and use your brush to start spreading the Mod Podge onto each surface you would like to decorate. Keep the layers thin, and be sure to only work on one surface at a time. Work quickly to avoid the glue drying, but try to keep things as neat as possible so that your end result will be great. My shelves will be completely covered, so I worked a bit horridly to get the shelves done in time for this tutorial. Also, try to keep the Mod Podge evenly spread to avoid wrinkles and air bubbles after the Mod Podge dries. Initially, the paper might look very wrinkled, but don’t worry. Things will smooth out once your shelves dry if you keep the Mod Podge thin and evenly spread.

After you’re done spreading your Mod Podge, carefully place your paper or fabric onto the covered surface. You’ll repeat the process of spreading Mod Podge and placing paper or fabric until your surfaces are covered and decorated in the way you’d like them to be.

Let your shelves dry completely before you continue to the next step. Once your shelves are dry, use your brush to paint a layer of Mod Podge on top of the paper or fabric you used to decorate your shelves. This will seal the paper or fabric and make sure it is hard and binds to the surface properly. I would recommend using 2 to 3 coats of Mod Podge, making sure to follow the directions provided on your bottle of Mod Podge. Also, make sure to let each coat of Mod Podge dry before you start painting on a new coat of Mod Podge. I painted on my first coat of Mod Podge, and then let the shelves dry over night. This isn’t necessary, but I just like to insure that my first layer is completely solid before I proceed with more coats of Mod Podge. I painted on 2 more coats of Mod Podge the following day.

Once you’re happy with your covered surfaces and everything is completely dry, you’re all done!

Here’s how mines turned out.
